Chapter Nine

No birds chirped on this rooftop. No leaves rustled. No children giggled. The only sound was my heartbeat in my ears.

“Hold your fire,” came a familiar voice. Nile’s voice. He stood with at least two dozen LEOs aiming their guns at us. Our people, our friends, lay motionless in a neat row directly in front of us, their eyes closed, their arms folded across their chests, their swords and small firearms still holstered. They had been ambushed, killed, and arranged as if on display. A little bit of psychological terror before the killing continued.

“Out of the stairwell, all five of you!” Nile commanded. Ori and Lech took two steps back toward the door, shielding Evin, Dal, and me.

“Is today opposite day?” Nile hollered. “I said, get out here, now!”

Lech and Ori did not move. Unseen in the dark stairwell, Evin patted Lech’s backpack, obviously searching for something. He found it, reached in, and took whatever it was out of a small individual pouch. This seemed to be the cue that Lech and Ori were waiting for. They suddenly became cooperative, moving forward with Evin and me stepping out behind them. Beside me, Evin palmed a small round object in his hand. I hoped it was a grenade.

“That’s better,” Nile said. “Guns and bags on the ground.”

My rifle joined the cacophony of clacking and thumping at our feet.

“Hands on your head,” Nile said. “Line up evenly.” I stepped up on the left side of Ori while Dal stepped up on her right. Down the line came Lech, then Evin. I started to panic. Not because twenty guns pointed at me. Not because I could die at any second. I panicked because Evin was too far away. My breathing turned into panting. Ori let a small stream of air escape her lips in a soft shh. My breaths slowed.

“Take five steps toward me,” Nile said.

Each of my legs felt like it weighed one hundred kilograms. Each step pounded in my head. I didn’t count, just stopped when the others did. The five steps brought us right in front of our dead companions. Their feet lay at our feet. I’d heard that when a person faints, they fall forward. I wondered if the same held true when a person died. If this were true and if they shot me now, I’d fall right on top of Hanna. A whimper escaped my lips.

“Are you afraid, Rain?” Nile smirked at me.

I didn’t respond. I kept staring at Hanna’s sweet face. She looked like she was sleeping. They all did, except for the bullet holes wracking their bodies.

“Get on your knees,” Nile commanded. I glanced over at Ori, who held the same noble composure as Segura had as she’d knelt in front of the LEOs at her camp. I remembered how regal Segura looked in the torchlight. She was a queen, and for all her faults, so was Ori. I couldn’t believe it was going to end like this for her. After the numerous violent
